 20 जनवरी, 1950 को दिल्ली में प्रोफेसर आलोक सागर का जन्म हुआ था। उन्होंने IIT दिल्ली से इलेक्ट्रॉनिक में इंजीनियरिंग की है।

 इसके बाद 1977 में वे यूएस गए, जहां ह्यूस्टन यूनिवर्सिटी से रिसर्च की डिग्री ली। इस दौरान उन्होंने डेंटल ब्रांच में पोस्ट डॉक्टरेट और समाजशास्त्र विभाग, डलहौजी यूनिवर्सिटी (कनाडा) से फेलोशिप भी की।

 वहां से पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद वो आईआईटी दिल्ली में प्रोफेसर बने। हालांकि, यहां उनका मन नहीं लगा और उन्होंने नौकरी छोड़ दी।
