An eyewitness said that after this, people in the stampede saw many people jumping below the railing of Footover Bridge to save their lives. Many eyewitnesses said that people were screaming that the bridge was breaking.

Many videos of this incident show that many people climbed the stairs of the stairs to avoid the stampede. Another eyeglass also pointed out that a slight part of the bridge was broken, due to the strained rumor caused a panic. मुंबई: ऐलफिंस्‍टन रेलवे स्‍टेशन पर हुई भगदड़ के कारणों के बारे में अभी कोई आधिकारिक जानकारी नहीं आई है लेकिन चश्‍मदीदों ने घटना के लिए अफवाह को जिम्‍मेदार माना है. घटनास्‍थल पर मौजूद कई चश्‍मदीदों ने बताया कि पुल टूटने की अफवाह के चलते यह हादसा हुआ. दरअसल भारी बारिश के बीच बेहद भीड़-भाड़ वाले इस स्‍टेशन में पुल टूटने की अफवाह फैल गई. एक चश्‍मदीद ने बताया कि उसके बाद मची भगदड़ में लोग उसने कई लोगों को अपनी जान बचाने के लिए फुटओवर ब्रिज की रेलिंग से नीचे कूदते हुए देखा. कई चश्‍मदीदों ने बताया कि लोग चीख रहे थे कि पुल टूट रहा है.

इस घटना के कई वीडियो में दिख रहा है कि कई लोग भगदड़ से बचने के लिए सीढि़यों की रेलिंग में चढ़ गए. एक अन्‍य चश्‍मदीद ने यह भी बताया कि पुल का एक मामूली सा हिस्‍सा टूटा था, उसी के चलते उपजी अफवाह के कारण भगदड़ मची. कई लोगों का यह भी कहना है कि एलफिंस्‍टन स्‍टेशन के पास का ब्रिज बेहद संकरा है और ऑफिस के टाइम पर वहां बहुत भीड़ होती है. कुछ लोगों ने शिकायती लहजे में भी कहा कि यहां पर नए ओवरब्रिज की मांग काफी लंबे समय से होती रही है लेकिन इस दिशा में कोई काम नहीं हुआ.
